Synopsis
Isak Borg, a grumpy retired doctor, goes from Stockholm to Lund, Sweden, with his pregnant and unhappy daughter-in-law, Marianne, to accept an honorary degree from his alma institution. They encounter a number of hitchhikers along the route, each of whom leads the elderly doctor to reflect on the pleasures and failings of his own life. These include the lively Sara, who looks just like the doctor’s first love.
